by Bryan DeBates, Space Foundation Vice President – Education

The Space Foundation’s STEM education outreach focuses on the ripple effect of influence that an exceptional educator can have on hundreds, or even thousands of students. One way we inspire educators is through our Teacher Liaison program, which began in 2004 to provide teachers with space-based training, resources, and support.

Teacher Liaisons tend to be Master Teachers who want to inspire the next generation of students to pursue, and excel in, the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Membership in this free program is open to educators of all disciplines, ranging from science and math, to language arts, physical education, special education, and the arts.

One thing these Teacher Liaisons have in common is their extraordinary dedication to inspiring students. Once they’re accepted into the program, new Teacher Liaisons are invited to attend the Space Foundation’s Space Symposium, held each spring in Colorado Springs. This conference brings together thousands of the world’s top space leaders, representing all sectors of the global space community, and always includes an educational component. Teacher Liaisons are not only invited to attend themselves, but they are also invited to bring their students for a tour of the Symposium exhibit center.

As a child, Tiffany Haley was one of those fortunate students whose 7th-grade class was invited to attend the Space Symposium. That Symposium experience, which included meeting Apollo 11 Command Module pilot Michael Collins, sparked her love of space. Afterward, she began saving her babysitting money to attend space camp, and her career path was launched. She returned to the Space Symposium years later as a Teacher Liaison and presented a teacher lesson plan to attendees.

Here is a snapshot of Tiffany’s career path:

    • Born in Colorado Springs, Tiffany earned her Girl Scouts Gold Award by sewing sound- and light-reducing blankets for babies in Memorial Hospital’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
    • As a Memorial Hospital volunteer, she spent most of the 1,000 hours she worked assisting in the NICU, and during that time was nominated and selected to carry the 1996 U.S. Olympic torch.
    • Tiffany earned her BA from the University of Colorado Boulder, and then her master’s degree from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
    • Teach for America assigned Tiffany to middle school science classes in Compton, California.
    • She then taught in Middletown, Connecticut, where she was named Middle School Science Teacher of the Year, during which time she also earned a second master’s degree.
    • Returning to Colorado Springs, Colorado, she instructed both engineering and astronomy classes at Air Academy High School, excelling as a teacher of honors courses including: Introduction to Engineering Design, Digital Electronics, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Aerospace Engineering, and Astronomy.
    • She was accepted into the Space Foundation’s Teacher Liaison program in 2016, and in 2018 received the Dr. Rochelle Abrams Space Across the Curriculum Educator Training Scholarship.
    • She received the Air Force Association’s Lance P. Sijan Chapter Teacher of the Year award in 2019.

Earlier this month, our Teacher Liaison program suffered a tragic loss when Tiffany Haley passed away suddenly at the age of 41. We’ll remember her as someone who lived life fully, and as an exceptional educator who taught her students to enjoy learning. She was a hands-on teacher, and her enthusiasm led students on field trips to such places as construction sites, the United States Air Force Academy’s wind tunnel, and student-built rocket launches. She engaged her students with fun computer projects like designing homes and castles, and creating gingerbread houses, electrical circuit projects, and 3D-printer holiday ornaments.

Tiffany exemplified what our Teacher Liaison program is all about, and why we do what we do here at the Space Foundation.

For the 13th summer, the Space Foundation is conducting teacher professional development for educators in Charles County (Md.) Public Schools. The week-long Space Across the Curriculum program is being held at the district’s James E. Richmond Science Center in Charles County and includes a public community night with featured speaker former NASA astronaut Duane “Digger” Carey.

Each summer, the Space Foundation spends one week conducting educator training for Charles County Public Schools. Teachers face many challenges in developing lesson plans that engage students, meet district and state standards and are fun and rewarding to deliver. Space Across the Curriculum helps educators take a fresh approach to their existing curriculum by introducing hands-on space-themed activities that get students excited and engaged in learning.

As its name indicates, Space Across the Curriculum instruction is adaptable for various curricula and grade levels. The Space Foundation places a great deal of emphasis on delivering professional development to educators with programs that meet education standards by integrating science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) into daily curriculum. The courses use space as the “hook” to engage students and provide activities that are instantly transferable to the classroom, such as the bubble activity pictured, which helps small children learn the difference between gas planets and rock planets.

Today, 26 teachers from 16 U.S.states completed professional development training at the Space Foundation Discovery Center in Colorado Springs. All of the teachers received scholarships to attend, thanks to the generosity of two donors.

During the four-day Space Across the Curriculum program, the teachers learned hands-on activities to use in their classrooms to reinforce learning in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

The subject matter was space-based, including lessons in aerodynamic concepts, project management, basic engineering principles, coding, programming, robotics, geological evidence from satellite images and biological effects on humans in space.

Through its education programs, the Space Foundation is building the next generation of space leaders and STEM professionals through teacher, student and community programs that use space themes to improve students' interest and skills in STEM subjects.

Today, the Space Foundation’s annual week-long Space Across Curriculum educator professional development program started at its Discovery Center in Colorado Springs.

The theme for the training is “Mission to Mars,” and is funded by two scholarships that cover participation by 26 teachers representing 16 U.S. states.

The “Mission to Mars” program will provide the teachers with hands-on activities to use in their classrooms, such as for lessons in aerodynamic concepts, project management, basic engineering principles, coding, programming, robotics, geological evidence from satellite images and biological effects on humans in space.

Dr. Rochelle Abrams Space Across the Curriculum Educator Training Scholarship and Congressional Space Policy Education Program
The goal of this scholarship fund is to help to build a future workforce of space professionals, as well as helping to educate policy makers about the need to support teachers as they train the future workforce.

The scholarship also funds the curriculum and supplies for these hands-on activities that focus on developing 21st Century skills for teachers to use in their classrooms, as well as materials and strategies for teachers to use when returning to their schools to share with their colleagues.

Attending the “Mission to Mars” training are the 22 teachers who were awarded the Abrams Scholarship for 2019.

    Warrell Family Scholarship
This scholarship fund is covering participation by four Colorado Springs-area teachers in the Space Across the Curriculum “Mission to Mars” training this summer. Each scholarship includes tuition and a stipend for participating.

There were exhibits explaining and capturing the significance of the Apollo 11 mission, combined with educational, hands-on STEM activities supporting the learning and technology needed for current and future achievements in space.

More than 1,000 space fans attended today’s celebration at the Discovery Center, and those who were old enough to remember the Apollo 11 mission were invited to share their memories for future generations in a Video Memory Booth. Others, could experience the Moon landing through virtual reality. And looking to future exploration of the red planet, the Discovery Center’s Mars Robotics Laboratory challenged visitors to maneuver rovers over a simulated Martian terrain.

The day’s activities also included the United States Postal Service unveiling of the new  Apollo 11 First Moon Landing stamp.

Thanks to support by premier sponsor Raytheon, 25 military families were admitted free to the celebration.

    Participating partners included:

    • Chick-fil-A Garden of the Gods
    • Colorado Springs Astronomical Society
    • Estes Rockets
    • Girl Scouts of Colorado
    • Global View/Earthseeds
    • Pikes Peak Library District
    • United States Air Force Academy

Those who missed the July 20 celebration should plan a trip to the Discovery Center to learn about the space race and Moon landing and other Apollo missions, as well as trying out a variety of other space-themed, hands-on activities.

The Discovery Center is open Tuesday – Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., and is located at 4425 Arrowswest Drive in Colorado Springs. Learn more about visiting the Discovery Center here.

Our thanks to Raytheon for sponsoring today’s Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Celebration at the Space Foundation Discovery Center in Colorado Springs. Also thanks to Raytheon, 25 military families were admitted free to today’s event.

Fifty years after the first humans stepped foot on the Moon, the Space Foundation celebrated with an event today that not only looked back at one of the greatest achievements in human history, but also looked forward to the next great adventures in space and what education and skills will be required to get there.

The celebration included a variety of STEM-related activities for all ages, such as Ozobots and Merge Cubes (pictured), virtual reality and instruction in our Mars Robotics Laboratory.

The Space Foundation Discovery Center is open to the public year round and is also a destination for school field trips and summer camps.

Later this month, teachers from across the country will receive a week of training in space-themed STEM lessons, such as aerodynamic principles, problem solving, collaboration and engineering concepts.

With the support of Raytheon and other partners, the Space Foundation is building the next generation of space leaders and improving the overall quality of education through teacher, student and community programs that use space themes to improve students’ interest and skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
