After a $3.5 million expansion and renovation led by Colorado-based architecture firm RTA Architects and general contractor GH Phipps, Space Foundation Discovery Center will unveil eight new exhibits, the Drone Zone and the Boeing Additive Manufacturing Space Laboratory. In addition to these new features, the center showcases a redesign of the Lockheed Martin Mars Robotics Laboratory and the Northrop Grumman Science Center, which houses the Science On a Sphere® display system. The renovation also includes upgraded state-of-the-art flooring and electrical system improvements. Two Colorado-based artists, Molly McClure and Juls Mendoza, have completed inspirational murals throughout the renovated space. Members of Carnegie Science Center provided graphic design support for selected signage.

As part of Space Foundation Leadership Academy, CSEP engages students in hands-on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) activities, expanding their knowledge and fostering a passion for space exploration. By empowering the next generation with these initiatives, Space Foundation and L3Harris are actively cultivating future leaders and contributors to the global space ecosystem.

Every April, Yuri’s Night parties are hosted around the world in commemoration of Yuri Gagarin becoming the first human to venture into space on April 12, 1961, and the inaugural launch of the first Space Shuttle on April 12, 1981. The event celebrates the past, present and future of space exploration while preparing the next generation to take their place within the space ecosystem.

Space Foundation’s Yuri’s Night is also a kickoff to the annual Space Symposium, to be held April 8-11 at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. “Space Foundation and The Gorman Foundation are thrilled to be back in Wahoo, Nebraska, for another Space in the Community program at Wahoo Public Schools,” said Melissa Patton, Space Foundation vice president of education. “The positive impact our SITC programming has had on teachers, students and the entire community is truly heartening. Our goal is to continue impacting this and other regional communities by inspiring and educating through hands-on STEAM activities, fostering interest in the global space ecosystem, and ultimately contributing to local economic development.”

Space Foundation educators will visit Wahoo Public Schools to equip teachers with space –education-focused STEAM lesson plans and materials for seamless integration into their curriculum. Additionally, teachers will receive content to prepare students for the upcoming April 2024 total solar eclipse. During the visit, educators will participate in a novel teacher engagement method, where they will have the opportunity to co-teach with Space Foundation space education specialists and be provided feedback on space education teaching methods. This collaborative effort aims to enhance teachers’ confidence in implementing space-based STEAM approaches within their classrooms.

The work they are doing to ignite the natural curiosity and passion of young learners aligns well with our mission – inspiring our students to thrive,” said Dr. Josh Snyder, director of learning, Wahoo Public Schools. “I believe humans are naturally inquisitive about the world around them, and the Space in the Community program will provide a variety of hands-on activities for them to further explore science, technology, engineering, art and math both within and outside our classroom walls. We hope this partnership and these hands-on opportunities will spark those natural curiosities within the members of our community!”

In 2021, the Gorman Foundation initiated its support for Space Foundation, driven by the active engagement of James W. Gorman III, the current Chairman of the Board. Gorman, who had developed a deep personal interest in Space Foundation since 2014, particularly its emphasis on space exploration and STEAM education, played a pivotal role. Through close collaboration with Space Foundation and the Wahoo Public Schools Foundation, The Gorman Foundation has been instrumental in bringing the Space in the Community program to rural areas.

As part of the SITC program, there will be a community day Saturday, March 23, 2024, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Wahoo Public Schools gymnasium. Community members will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities with Tello drones, Sphero robots, BeeBots, and a variety of other STEAM lessons. Additionally, the Branched Oak Observatory will be bringing a hands-on meteorite display and solar telescopes (weather permitting). Attendees will receive solar glasses for the eclipse and participate in activities such as crafting sundials and using planispheres to explore the night sky. The event is free and open to the entire Wahoo community.

SITC unites communities to inspire PreK-12 students through engaging science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) activities, empower teachers with professional development opportunities, and elevate communities through special events.

Space Foundation educators will visit Connecticut school districts to introduce students and teachers to a wide variety of on-site and virtual space education programs. A teacher professional development workshop is also scheduled to equip educators with the necessary tools and knowledge to integrate space education into their curriculum and prepare students for the April 2024 total solar eclipse.

“We are thrilled to continue partnering with the Petit Family Foundation to expand our Space in the Community program to the incredible students, educators and communities of Connecticut,” said Melissa Patton, Space Foundation vice president of education. “Through this program, we aim to cultivate lifelong STEAM learners, nurture local talent, and bolster economic development.”

The Petit Family Foundation honors the memories of Jennifer Hawke-Petit, Hayley Elizabeth Petit and Michaela Rose Petit by continuing the kindness, idealism and activism that defined their lives. The foundation’s funds are given to foster the education of young people, especially women in the sciences; to improve the lives of those affected by chronic illnesses; and to support efforts to protect and help those affected by violence.

“The Petit Family Foundation is again very excited that we are partnering with Space Foundation to educate and excite elementary and middle school students throughout Connecticut. We hope that this interaction will stimulate interest in space and, specifically, sciences, technology, and mathematics,” said Dr. William A. Petit Jr., president of the Petit Family Foundation.

As part of the SITC program, there will be a community night on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024, from 6-8 p.m. EST, at Smalley Elementary School located at 175 West St., New Britain, Connecticut. Community members will explore hands-on STEAM activities and meet former NASA astronaut Duane “Digger” Carey. Activities include space drones, robotics color coding, solar system bookmarks, rovers on Mars, and more. The event is free and open to the public. School visits will be made in select school districts on the dates below.
